the day that I out-hipstered myself

Well, I finally out-hipstered myself today. Get ready for it... I wore green suede oxfords with no socks and cuffed jeans.

I thought only dudes in Brooklyn who sport flannel shirts and cashmere beanies wear oxfords, you ask? I know.

I've been anti-oxford for a while. They seem like the most obvious way of trying to associate yourself with some sort of alternative culture. In most cases they're pretty unflattering - especially the heeled variations which make even Kate Moss look like she has Fred Flintstone calves.

However, today I stole this pair from my mom's closet (yep. you heard me right. but she doesn't wear them with cuffed skinny jeans, I promise.), then I threw on a silk scarf and really didn't hate it. Blame it on the obscene amount of time I've spent worshipping this girl and this girl this week, but this look is starting to grow on me. Am I the only one who was hesitant to jump on the oxford band wagon or is anyone else with me?

Anthropologie top, J.Crew scarf and shoes, belt taken from a random skirt, vintage pin, H&M jeans

  1. I like to think we agree on everything, but I've actually loved Oxfords for a while now. My best friend had a pair in 6th grade, and I've wanted one ever since. As for you, do not fear the hipster shame. You did not purchase faux-scuffed oxfords (brogues even!) from a fast-fashion factory. You snagged your mom's, which you can pass off as both vintage and environmentally-chic. Okay, I may have made you sound like even more of a hipster. Désolée.

  2. Oh, I have Oxfords, too. And I love them... And I totally like your outfit, it looks really great together!!
You know, here in Germany only boring law-students or kids with very wealthy parents wear this style and I don't belong in either of this categories. BUT, I really can't help myself lately: I like this kind of preppy style. :) Maybe it's my secret desire to have acutally rich parents... Haha, too late. :(

    xo.

  6. I am so with you, and this is me still hesitating. Don't get me wrong, they look great on you, but I am not sure I am ready to take the plunge. They will probably be out of style by the time I like them enough to wear them.

  7. Ah, I relate! I've been hating on Oxfords for quite some time now, but yesterday, while looking for cute closed-but-not-knee-high shoes I caught myself considering... guess what! :-D
I didn't buy them, but neither did you, hehe. Same thing happened to me with belts and now I wear them all the time! Oh my. Does that mean an ethno-print low-crotch Hammer pant is creeping up on me? *shudder*

  8. I love anything vintage, so I adored the oxford look right from the start! It all depends on how you wear them though. These looks super crazy cute with that ouftit on you!

  9. First I was ashamed of myself for thinking oxfords were cute. Then I bought a pair and were ashamed of wearing granny looking shoes. Then I fell in love and bought another pair. The feet want what the feet want.

I'm also loving the belted scarf look. Gotta try that one!

  14. Initially I was hesitant about purchasing oxfords, but simply because I liked the looks of the more expensive, well-made variety, wasn't willing to spend a substantial amount, and I wasn't sure if I could pull off the look. I tried on a pair a few times and made mental notes of what sort of outfits I could wear, and I finally bought a gorgeous deep brown leather pair. I do like those ones you're sporting! Plus, I think this looks really well put together rather than hipster-y - perfect way to wear oxfords!

  15. I like the belted scarf thing you've got going on here. The belt ties in with the shoes (which I think look pretty good to tell the truth). :)

  16. Thank you for the lovely comment on my blog! :)

As for oxfords - I've liked them for a while, but the pair that I have looks kinda weird with socks. :( Maybe I have to try what you're doing, haha.

I love this outfit though, the belted scarf looks great! I'm loving your blog so far, so I'm following it now. :)

  18. Lovely oxfords. Must say I've never noticed any calf issues with the heeled variety only they sort of ruin the comfortable aspect.
The belted scarfs are pretty hipster too! ;)

  21. I jumped on that band wagon pretty quickly and I'm not a band wagon kind of girl... But I went shopping with my much more fashion forward cousin and loved her suggestion of buying oxfords. Attractive, fashionable shoes that were not heels. I was hooked immediately.

  22. I don't know why but I've been obsessed with oxfords. Funny thing is I have a pair and I've never worn them. They're the two-tone kind (navy and grey-ish blue). Would much rather have a solid color like yours.
