the day I finally out-hipstered myself

This weekend I went to a place in San Francisco that does tintype portrait sessions...

Isn't the result incredible? Tintype photography was the first type of "film" - it uses an aluminum plate coated in some chemicals to capture an image. Photobooth does a quick portrait session with you, processes the image on-site and you walk out with the actual plate that your portrait was captured on.

My portrait in the drying box. I spy some hipsters...

Once the image is done they make a digital copy so that you can order enlargements. If I had a kid I would totally blow up a portrait like this. It's hard to tell, but these are at least 4 feet tall.

After growing up in a town where the only thing to do on a Sunday afternoon was to watch some kind of lame sporting event on TV, it's been totally blissful to live in San Francisco where interesting places like this seem to lie around every corner.

  1. Oh my gosh I LOVE this! I wish I lived in an interesting city. Too bad only a couple really exist in Canada and the housing prices in both are exorbitant.

  9. haha "out-hipstered" is the perfect way to describe this (and really all of SF) but as a new photo geek, I'm loving this. Can't wait to move out of central IL...but until then I'm going to vicariously live through your neat adventures.

  10. I want to be a hipster when I grow up, or at least get my portrait done at this place. May I ask how much one would run?

  11. *gasp!* this is awesome. I've kind of been boycotting san fran for the sake of the rumored infinite naked people and excrement on the street, but this...this is on my 'pro' list of all things SF!!! Lovely photo!!
