When I finally got back to my apartment last Friday night my brain was fried and I needed an activity to occupy myself while I watched crappy movies on Netflix. There's a big blank wall in my kitchen and since my other masking tape project turned out so well, I decided to do a little variation.
I love this quote from Alice in Wonderland (which I originally found here), so I downloaded a new font (for free here), printed it out, then used my masking tape/wax paper technique to transfer it to the wall.
It took me a few hours to complete, but I love the effect and the whole project only cost $10!
See the full DIY instructions after the jump!
What you'll need:
- tape (I used the 2" version of this)
- wax paper
- masking tape
- permanent marker (not black)
After printing out the word/shape that you want, tape it behind a piece of wax paper.
Fill in the letters with permanent marker. Remove the wax paper.
Cover the letters with masking tape.
Flip the wax paper over and cut out the letters.
You should be able to remove the wax paper and stick your letters to the wall! If you're looking for a less time consuming project it would be fun to do one giant letter (just use lots of rows of masking tape that slightly overlap).
If you try this out I'd love to see pics of the results!
This reminds me of the BBQ flags project. Did you really get this done in the space of two movies? Love the quote and the final product too. ~mom
ReplyDeleteErin, I know this is going to sound like a silly question, but I'm completely astounded! Does the wax paper really stick to the wall? I'm thinking about doing this in my room!
ReplyDeleteMom - more like 4 movies. I don't know why I do these things.
ReplyDeleteAlex - The wax paper peels off of the masking tape, then you stick the masking tape right on the wall! Easy!
Erin, this is an absolutely WONDERFUL idea. I'm definitely going to do this. I have a huge space in my apartment right above my TV and this would be perfect.

I am OBSESSED with this! It turned out so, so cute! Definitely keeping this in mind for my apartment!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. I love that font, too. It reminds me of (*sniff*) Blueprint. Welcome back, by the way!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Much scheming of quotes going on over here now... I'm a sucker for overly time-consuming but awesome looking projects :)
ReplyDeleteThis is GENIUS. Buying those quote decals pre-made is expensive and then you have the same quote as everyone else. Now I just need to figure out what quote I want to use...
ReplyDeleteI love this quote, such a smart DIY idea!
ReplyDeleteAH! SUCH a great idea. Especially for those of us who can't paint our rented walls! Looking forward to trying this little number on a cold NYC weekend!
ReplyDeleteCheers!

holy s%@^$ that's BRILLIANT. You know I'm going to copy you, right? I don't know why, but this comes at a perfect time. I need to write something outrageous on my wall.
ReplyDeleteSo cute!! It looks perfect, and would be relatively harmless to change the quote too.
ReplyDelete(Side note: I went to Butler- just graduated also. Hello fellow central-IN Hoosier!)
What an awesome idea - I love this! I like the idea of using two colors to make one big letter with stripes - would be some great decor!
ReplyDeleteHi Erin! My project came out completely different than I had originally planned but it was inspired by this post so I figured I'd share my finished wall quote

I couldn't find masking tape so I used decorative duct tape (white and a paisley silver one) but I didnt realize they wouldn't peel off of the wax paper...lol. So I ended up just using poster putty to stick the wax paper to my wall, painted the kite, and tied a ribbon around a tack for the bow!
Can't complain for a $5 dollar project--Thanks for the inspiration!
This is awesome...But where can you find black masking tape?
ReplyDeleteDick Blick, or maybe Micheal's?
ReplyDeleteI tried to do this with duct tape because I couldnt find black masking tape and failed miserably :(
ReplyDeleteEnded up doing the same thing Holly did and this happened :) -
