in which I give a sermon about fashion. apologies in advance.

I rewatched the interview with Sally Singer that I mentioned in a previous post and can't help but jot down all of the brilliant things that come out of her mouth. She can articulate everything I've always thought about fashion but have never quite been able to verbally convey.

I hate when fashion is thought of as something that's restrictive, creating rules that must adhered to in order to gain some sort of desired social outcome. People are always trying to figure out what they should wear, which stops them from ever maximizing the satisfaction that comes from finding their own personal style.

The pleasure that comes from wearing purple suede pumps paired with polka-dotted tights or patent oxfords with a high-waisted skirt is so much greater than whatever supposed social acceptance would've come from wearing a more expected combination.

Most designers (or at least the good ones - I'm thinking of the Rodarte girls, Alber Elbaz and even Jenna Lyons) are people who understand the transformative power of clothes and want to give their customers tools to reshape internal and external perceptions of themselves. You have to spend money on clothes and wear them every day - why not have some fun in the process?

I'll stop before this starts to become a sermon, but I might have to continue this little rant another day...

Vintage top, J.Crew cardigan and flats, H&M jeans

I found this top at a vintage store earlier this week for $16. It has pleats, smocking, flowers and coffee beans and I love it. It'll be great this summer with some jorts and big Jackie O. sunglasses, but for now a cardigan on top will have to do.

  7. Oh, do so! I'd like to know what else you think about all that! As far as clothes go, rules are definitely overrated. Lucky for us we live in a time (and most of us also in a place) where they are not as strict as they were once. WiN! :-D

  10. i completely agree. fashion is an art. and rather difficult to find. every thing might not look "good" by the worlds standard but fashion is another form of self expression and extremely person. sheesh. i better stop before this comment becomes a sermon!
